Many homes in the Greater Toronto Area utilize a central heating and cooling system. A typical set up consists of a furnace connecting the return air ducts to the supply ducts and an Air conditioner with one part sitting inside the duct work on top of the furnace and the other outside by the exterior walls.

The Furnace has a heat exchange inside that works with either NG or propane and the A/C’s indoor part acts as the heat exchanger for the A/C utilizing various refrigerant gases such as R 410 or older now not permitted for new uses R22. The gases in both systems are isolated, in the case of the furnace it should vented to the outdoors using approved methods; and the refrigerant is in a closed loop using copper line sets to connect the indoor and outdoor unit.
